IT Leaders Prepare for Next Waves of IT Innovation by Researching Public Cloud and Piloting Mobile Apps Framingham, Mass. – February 21, 2012 – IDG’s CIO, the executive-level IT media brand providing insight into business technology leadership, reveals the CIO Magazine Tech Poll results for January 2012. The poll findings demonstrate that IT budgets are remaining strong as well as provides insight into how respondents are investing their budgets in specific technology categories and organizational objectives. Responses from more than 300 top IT executives show that investments creating topline revenue growth is their top priority (43%), followed by improving business process (20%), enabling business innovation and expansion (19%), lowering business operation costs (13%) and lowering IT operations costs (3%). IT budgets remain strong for 2012, with a majority (84%, up from 81% in 2011) reporting their IT budget will increase or remain the same over the next 12 months. Overall, organizations are reporting a 4% increase in IT spending for 2012. “The smart use of technology is always a key component in driving innovation and creating a competitive edge,” said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief, CIO magazine and events. “We see IT value proving itself across the board in many organizations, both in steady or growing IT budgets as well as in more customer-facing applications that lead to growth.” Sever virtualization is the top technology in production, with approximately three-quarters (72%) of participants implementing a server virtualization project. Server virtualization projects have grown significantly year over year (56% in 2011 and 42% in 2010). Additionally, IT leaders are actively researching the next phase in IT projects and initiatives, including public cloud computing services (40%), BI & analytics (34%), mobile applications (33%) and private cloud computing services (32%). Mobile apps (27%) is the top technology being piloted and desktops/laptops (53%) and smartphones (53%) are the top the technologies being upgraded. Over the next twelve months investments will increase for many technologies. Mobile apps (57%), BI & analytics (53%) and tablet upgrades (53%) are the technologies that the majority of respondents are increasing investments for in the coming year. Ironically upgrading desktops/laptops, which is currently high in production, and tops the list for upgrades, has the largest budget decrease (17%). “Mobile and the consumerization of IT are very visible and time sensitive issues for IT leaders, which is reflected in the fact that more than half of the respondents are in the process of upgrading their organization’s smartphones,” said Adam Dennison, vice president and publisher, CIO. “These new technologies allow businesses to move faster and enable innovation and growth. IT decision-makers, thought leaders and solution providers will gather March 4-6, 2012 in San Francisco at IDG Enterprise’s Consumerization of IT in the Enterprise Conference & Expo (CITE) to discuss how mobile and consumerization can move organizations to the next level.” To review the full results contact Adam Dennison, vice president and publisher, CIO at adennison@cio.com. IDG Enterprise’s Consumerization of IT in the Enterprise Survey Details Consumer Device Adoption, Organizational Concerns and Vendor Requirements Framingham, Mass. – January 24, 2012 – IDG Enterprise—the media company comprising CFOworld, CIO, CIO Executive Council, Computerworld, CSO, DEMO, InfoWorld, ITworld and Network World—releases the results from the Consumerizaton of IT in the Enterprise survey, examining end-users’ expectations of consumer device use in the enterprise, the challenges this trend is creating for IT departments and the vendor requirements to become a trusted partner. The survey, completed by more than 1,900 IT and security decision-makers from a range of industries, shows that the consumerization of IT trend is being embraced by a majority (72%) of the respondents’ organizations, which provides employees flexibility on using personal/consumer devices to perform work tasks. Currently, smartphones (68%) are the employee owned device most supported by IT departments. The business benefits of the consumerization of IT trend are currently less tangible, with the largest positive impact contributing to user satisfaction (79%), user productivity (76%) and process efficiency collaboration (68%). While end-users see the benefits of consumerization of IT, organizations need to stay aware of adoption risks. Security concerns were a trend throughout the study. When asked about the greatest challenge in embracing the consumerization of IT trend, respondents cited security (82%) and lack of control (55%). These concerns provide vendors with the opportunity to alleviate pain points and gain competitive advantage by offering products and services that provide security for devices (85%), integrate into the organization’s IT architecture (83%) and manage the proliferation of devices (69%). Key findings include: - Three-quarters (72%) of participants have embraced the use of consumerization of IT by allowing employees to use their own device to perform work tasks either away from work or at work (48%), expanding the list of devices provided to employees to include more consumer devices (42%) and provides an allowance for employees to buy personal devices to use at work (11%). - Mobile devices—including smartphones (79%) and tablets (68%)—rank highest in the types of personal devices organizations will support and BlackBerry Phones (68%), iPhones (61%) and iPads (54%) are the top consumer devices supported by IT departments. Security is the number one challenge for the majority of organizations (82%) and it poses the biggest negative impact for organizations. Security is also the biggest growth potential for vendors (85%). “Technology vendors, especially in the mobile space, have great opportunity to capitalize on this growing trend where employees are selecting the device they would like to use to perform work functions,” said Bob Melk, SVP, group publisher & CMO, IDG Enterprise. “Understanding organizational concerns and working with IT departments to develop policies and procedures and create business value around consumerization of IT will provide vendors with a competitive advantage and provide IT decision-makers with additional opportunities to meet end-user demands while securing organizational assets. To help facilitate this conversation IDG Enterprise has launched the CITE (Consumerization in the Enterprise) Conference and Expo, providing a comprehensive look at the emerging issues, demands and opportunities surrounding the infusion of consumer technologies into today’s workplace.” To receive the complete study results contact Bob Melk at bmelk@idgenterprise.com. CITE Conference & Expo to be Held in San Francisco, March 4-6, 2012
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – October 13, 2011 – IDG Enterprise—the media company comprising CFOworld, CIO, CIO Executive Council, Computerworld, CSO, DEMO, InfoWorld, ITworld and Network World—announces the launch of the first enterprise conference devoted exclusively to the consumerization of IT in the enterprise (CITE). The CITE Conference & Expo will gather leading IT and business decision-makers for a comprehensive look at the emerging issues, demands and opportunities surrounding the infusion of consumer technologies into today’s workplace. The consumerization of IT—the influence that personal devices, the app store paradigm, gaming, social tools and more have on the expectations of employees and customers for workplace tools and innovation—is on a trajectory of blazing growth. Embracing this trend is critical not only for attracting and empowering the next generation workforce but for retaining customers and creating business advantage. This conference will address the ways the enterprise can embrace new tools, provide guidance on how to put a consumer device governance and management model into place, and enable best practices discussions between IT peers and solutions providers, all with the goal of equipping organizations to keep up with the speed of change. CITE will bring together IT and business decision-makers, technology solution providers, venture capitalists and evangelists, March 4-6, 2012 in San Francisco, CA, to discuss the far-reaching topics of this IT metamorphosis. Premiere sponsors include Cisco, who as Device Game Changer sponsor has committed to equipping attendees with the Cisco Cius throughout the event, and Citrix as one of only three Game Changer sponsors. “The cloud era is here, and with it, an increasingly tech-savvy population is demanding the same combination of power and simplicity in the workplace that they enjoy at home,” said Kim (Woodward) DeCarlis, vice president of corporate marketing at Citrix Systems. “It is no longer about the device, since today’s technology enables us to work and play from anywhere. Enterprise IT needs to transform their thinking and say ‘yes’ to their users by implementing self-service corporate app stores and ‘bring your own’ device programs. As a result, users gain the freedom and flexibility they crave, while IT can focus on secure delivery of the desktops, apps and data that support business.” The CITE agenda–developed in conjunction with an advisory board of industry thought leaders–gives IT and business decision-makers a holistic view on how personal technology is changing and infusing the workplace, including tablets, smartphones, 4G, social media, cloud, gaming, virtualization and more. Sessions will align with the conference tagline. “Meet the Next Generation of Business,” including: - Mobile device procurement, management and policies - Using the social media paradigm for communication within and outside the enterprise - Network impact: What you need to be ready - Mobile enablement and data integration across cloud-based applications - Managing risks and the latest security threats - Data access and integration The CITE Advisory Board includes: - Whitney Tidmarsh Bouck, General Manager, Box Enterprise, Box.net - Marie Hattar, Vice President, Enterprise Segment Marketing, Cisco - Kim (Woodward) DeCarlis, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, Citrix Systems - Doug Neal, Research Fellow, Leading Edge Forum, CSC - Cindy McKenzie, SVP, Enterprise Application Management, Fox Group - Dave Malcolm, CISO, Hyatt Hotels Corporation - Anne McCrory, VP, Editorial Event Strategy, IDG Enterprise - Bob Melk, SVP, Group Publisher & CMO, IDG Enterprise - Alex Rosen, Managing Director, IDG Ventures - Walter F. Lang, CIO, WellPoint, Inc. “The melding of cloud, social media and mobile is now penetrating the enterprise and impacting the manner by which business is conducted and how companies engage with their employees and customers,” said Michael Friedenberg, president & CEO, IDG Enterprise. “By leveraging the power of consumer technologies, organizations have the opportunity to gain immediate competitive advantage. This conference will provide the necessary dialogue and insights that allow the enterprise to capitalize on the opportunities surrounding the consumerization of IT as well as provide the stepping stones for organizations that have not yet adopted this model on how to implement consumer technology options into their organization.” The CITE content team is conducting a “Call for Presentations” with a deadline of November 18, 2011.
